The Kitchen Project

At School of Louise’s Dreams, we feed more than 200 children per day as part of their schooling. Since many of the families cannot afford do feed their children three meals a day, we provide our students with breakfast and lunch. This not only nourishes them, but also allows them to learn effectively during the school day.

The kitchen in School of Louise’s Dream had always been fairly primitive. Like all traditional kitchens in Nicaragua, the stove was more of an open fire. For many years it lacked a chimney, and smoke would fill the kitchen and choke the lungs of the cooking staff. Recently, the Vernon D. and Florence E. Roosa Family Foundation donated money to rehabilitate a portion of the building for a new, modern kitchen.

As part of the rehabililitation effort, in early 2009, a building contractor named James M.S. Johnson volunteered his time and money to install a chimney for the school. Proving once again his resourcefullness, James used steel drums and a fan to clear the kitchen’s air.

Our kitchen has improved greatly over the last few years, but it still needs many appliances and amenities, such as: a large stove to replace the open-pit fire that the staff currently uses, a refrigerator to keep food from spoiling, counter-tops that can be kept clean, and cabinets. In short, everything one would need to continue to provide safe, nutritious food for the children.

Please help the volunteers and staff at our school continue our efforts to provide healthy lunches for the children of Nagarote. Your donation in any amount would be appreciated. Please see information on how to donate on our DONATIONS PAGE.
